We have spent some enjoyable time recently on Trees for Life’s fascinating Dundreggan Estate site, having been asked to repeat a deer dung density survey by Doug Gilbert. It has been really interesting to go back to the site and monitor the level of change in deer abundance and distribution since the last time we were on site. It is such a lovely place to work, with great views and an interesting range of upland habitats present, and it was nice to see the progress that has been made since the last time we visited. The survey work was based on the technical methods we developed in the early 2000’s, as described in Forestry Commission FC Bulletin 128 “ Estimating deer abundance in woodlands: the combination plot technique ”.
