We are part way through a major project in the south of Scotland, assessing the abundance and distribution of Fallow deer Dama Dama. Much of our work involves surveying upland sites, and most of these sites have Roe, Sika or Red deer present – working with Fallow deer again in Lowland woodland has been really interesting, having worked often with them in the past and having spent a lot of time observing them on the way to and from work in Highland Perthshire. Another fascinating aspect of the work has been meeting all the tenant farmers on whose land the deer range – they have quite a tough time farming at the moment because of poor prices for their crops and animals, and it has been interesting to see that deer can also impact their operations markedly.
