Caenlochan SAC – herbivore impact assessment

We started the second phase of a major job this week for SNH measuring herbivore impacts on the Caernlochan SAC.  Spent some time up on Glas Maol developing a few bolt-on monitoring techniques we want to use to expand out the knowledge base a bit.  Came across some dwarf willow, as well as this old experimental enclosure (?).

Summer evening – out culling Fallow bucks

Out with a pal whilst he shot some deer last night.  Interesting to see a fallow doe running around with a tiny fawn, right at the end of July.  Beavers continuing to show themselves around the place – impacts now apparent in so many places, and accumulating at a fairly high rate…!

Monitoring red deer on Liathach using remote cameras

We were setting up an interesting job for NTS this week, laying out some trail cameras at the back of Liathach in Torridon to observe deer movements.  It involved lugging a load of kit into the back corries and drilling some holes for installation.  Pouring with rain, as so often here. Peat Action 2018-19

  Our Monadhliath peatland restoration project is now in its second year.  In the next 8 months or so, we need to treat all the land we didn't manage to work on last winter because it was so snowy!       We also hope to treat a new cohort of land, slated for the second year of the project, assuming that SNH can help fund it through the latest…
