Impacts of floating road construction on bog

We are involved in a very interested project to quantify the impact on active blanket bog of wind turbine excavation and floating road construction. The project has been running for several years to gather pre-construction baseline data, and construction of the site has just recently begun. We designed a rig to help us detect whether the deck of the floating road sinks once is it loaded with construction traffic –…

Peatland restoration and impacts on water chemistry

A new experimental trial has just been completed on one of our client’s study sites in Lanarkshire. It involves testing the runoff from several areas on which different types of peatland restoration management have been attempted. The various things we are interested in include: nitrogen loads, potassium loads, phosphorous loads, Dissolved Organic Carbon, Particulate Organic Carbon and water colour. The project is exciting because it is the first time that…

Surface erosion on a bare peat flat

One of our active projects involves measuring rates of surface erosion on a bare peat flat in the Highlands. We are using modified version of Gerlach Troughs for this work, and re-visited them for the first time recently to quantify the flux of peat sediment. We were amazed to see how much peat had washed off the surface, so much in fact that they exceeded the design limit we had…
